Service-Learning Projects
Service to Others is the basic Lions philosophy, providing opportunities and resources for young people to serve their communities through school-based service learning. Lions Quest programs are innovative and flexible, and rooted in the belief that young people are valuable resources, who can play active and meaningful roles in addressing the issues that affect their lives, their communities, and the world. Service-Learning projects should stimulate students' intellectual curiosity, guiding them towards active citizenship and positive social action. Some service-learning project ideas include:
- Making craft products to be sold to staff and students to raise money for a local cause, such as purchasing snacks and/or supplies for a local after-school program, donate the funds to a local pet shelter, hold an ice cream social for community Seniors and youth, as an intergenerational activity, etc.
- Hold a food and/or clothing drive, to help those that are less fortunate
- Perform prevention skits or puppet shows for a local elementary school, on stranger danger or bullying
- Students can provide an evening of musical performances for a local nursing home, using their school band instruments
- Students can create a mosaic of tile, stone, or other material, honoring a group of people that have made significant accomplishments and/or contributions to the community
- Hold estimation contests (i.e. guess how many beads are in a jar, or how many m&m's, etc.), where students and staff can donate a quarter to guess, or hold a book fair, and use the proceeds to purchase school supplies, such as dictionaries, pencils, paper, rulers, etc. for elementary school students
- Hold a community blood drive
- Create slogan posters to be posted throughout the school with prevention messages, character development messages, multicultural themes, etc.
- Have a story-telling or book reading hour for pre-school students
If you employ Lions Quest programs in your school and have implemented service-learning projects, or if you are a Lion who has worked with a group of students in carrying out a Lions sponsored project, we at Lions Quest would love to hear from you, so that we can share your good deeds with everyone!
