“The [LQ] in-service was more than excellent.  It was ironic to enjoy working on Saturday but it happened.  The curriculum is excellent and will become a valued component of our curriculum.”

Fresh Resources!

As the school year comes to a close, and teachers venture through a much-deserved break, Lions Quest will be busy planning for the next academic year.

Our Skills for Growing and Skills for Action curriculum kits will be undergoing cosmetic changes that will appeal to today’s kids.  We will also be revising our Drug Information Guide, and updating our media resources and rationale.  All updates will be accessible online for easy download.

For those of you who may be in need of an additional Skills for Growing or Skills for Action kits, now is the time to buy!  The current kits are available for just $50 each, a great discount!  This is a perfect opportunity to replace those worn materials or add another grade level to your collection.  To order, call 1-800-446-2700.

Does your school need to address bullying?  Lions Quest can help!  We will be working on new lessons designed to define bullying, resolve conflict, and handle bullying peacefully.  To further support a whole-school effort, we will be preparing a new “bullying” staff development workshop, available in half-day and full-day formats.  We are excited to offer these new resources this fall!

Do you have other ideas for Lions Quest?  Maybe you have suggestions for additional resources.  We’d love to hear from you.  Feel free to email us!  Sandy.olear@lionsclubs.org.  Remember, technical assistance is always available as a component of your Lions Quest program.

Neff 6, Lancaster, PA shares Lions Quest experience

Lori Shenk, Neff 6 Lions Quest teacher, from Manheim Township School District, PA, recently shared her LQ experience, as well as thoughts from the sixth grade students who enjoy the program.

“Working with our local Lions clubs and Lions Quest has been an inspiring experience.  It is such a privilege to see, on a daily basis, the Quest program impacting students’ lives.  I’ve seen students’ enthusiasm for life and their high expectations for our class time together.  I’ve seen, in spite of sobering world events, their hopeful outlook for a future that brings good things.  I’ve seen their bravery as they’ve put their opinions out on the table for the rest of us to think about and to respond to.  And I’ve seen them learn how to disagree with an idea without verbally attacking the person who shared it.  I’ve also seen them seek answers to problems and conflicts in their own lives.  I’ve seen them bringing concerns for others to class.  I’ve seen their fresh outlook on life -- the zest with which they are thinking about who they are and who they want to become.”

“It’s a privilege to work and learn with Quest students.  I’m thankful that I have this small space of time in their lives, to support them and to celebrate their successes as they make the transition from childhood to adolescence.  And I’m thankful for a masterfully written curriculum that offers students the skills they need to successfully navigate adolescence.”

Neff 6 students have insightful comments as well:

“Quest has helped me a lot because at home I used to be angry (short-tempered) but Quest has helped control my temper.”

“Quest is helping me to interact well with others and to be myself.”

“Thank you for looking in to me, not at me, to see who I really am.  I hope we never have to stop Quest class.  Thank you.”

“Quest class encourages me not to let anyone push me away from my goals and always to be me.  Quest has inspired my life.”

“Quest is a BIG help because it shows us the future and how to unlock all the    doors as we get older.  It also shows us a lot more ways to say NO to drugs.”

National Schools of Character

Congratulations to the 2008 Character Education Partnership (CEP) NSOC winners and finalists!  For a complete school list, click here.

We’d like to extend special recognition to school winners from “Lions Quest” districts in Cherry Hill, NJ, and Hinsdale, IL, and a school finalist from the Hamilton, NJ district.  We are proud to be part of school environments that encompass service learning, bullying prevention, mentoring, and tolerance.  The record-number of applications, combined with the assessment of results within the schools, provide evidence that quality character education improves not only social and emotional learning but also academic achievement.

Every year, CEP names 10 public and private schools and districts as National Schools of Character.  Award recipients receive a $20,000 grant to enhance their program and provide outreach to other educators.  Visit www.character.org for more information.

Service-Learning as a tool for high school dropout prevention

A new report, available from Learn and Serve America’s National Service-Learning Clearinghouse library, presents research showing the ability of service-learning to address some of the principle causes of dropping out.  The report also draws on research from a national literature review, which found that service-learning improves almost every aspect of education that has an effect on graduation rates.  Read more.

Lions Quest workshops cover variety of topics

A Lions Quest regional workshop was held in Oak Brook, IL, on June 9th and 10tth.  Participants from Illinois, Iowa, Indiana and Utah, visited the International Association of Lions Clubs office to participate.  After overcoming a few “glitches” due to the stormy weekend weather, the workshop was a big success.  Facilitator Ken Frazier received rave reviews from the K-8 teachers, counselors and administrators.

The Lions Quest one-day staff development offerings are gaining popularity across the country as well!  Service-Learning workshops were held at Rutgers University in New Jersey this past February and April for capacity audiences.  In August, Western Oregon University will be co-hosting a S-L workshop for area educators, while Solano and Alameda County Offices of Education in California will be offering the Classroom Discipline: Establishing Respect & Responsibility workshop for their teachers.
